Our 4-legged baby Dutchess

Some 10 months ago, Nancy and I decided to purchase a pure bred yellow lab. The one we wanted when we first looked at the pups was already taken, but one was very fascinated with our shoes and laces. I picked up the pup and put her in Nancy's arms, and right then we knew we would buy her. Dutchess is her name,and she is a huge part of our life now.

Dutchess will turn 1 year old on the 31st of March, and here are a few photos from her first year with us. We will add more photos as the days go on!

Crusaders roll past Foxcroft 3-0

uesday in Bangor, Sierra Pierce and Victoria Miller each had a goal and an assist as the Crusaders of John Bapst shutout the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 3-0 in girls varsity soccer action. With the victory, Bapst improves to 2-0 on the young season while Foxcroft sits at 0-1.

The Crusaders dominated the game for the majority of the 80 minutes of play, and on the defensive side of the ball limited the Ponies to just one shot in each half.

Pierce put the Crusaders on the board with 26:52 left in the opening half assisted by Maggie Lynn to give Bapst a 1-0 lead.

Miller made it 2-0 Bapst with 9:42 remaining in the half with an assist by Pierce, and Sarah Pyne wrapped up the scoring for the half with a goal off an assist from Miller with six seconds to play to put the Crusaders on top 3-0.

Despite the Crusaders total control of the second half and a shot difference of 19-1, Bapst was not able to add to their three goal’s in the first half.

Abby Pyne picked up the shutout in net for the Crusaders making two saves on two Foxcroft shots.

Haley Mcleod had a very busy afternoon for the Ponies making 14 saves on 40 John Bapst shots.

Bapst also got the advantage in corner shots 11-0.

Hawks, Vikings battle to 3-3 tie

Caribou never led during the game, but twice battled back to tie the score and pull out a 3-3 double overtime tie against the Hermon Hawks on Pottle Field at Hermon High School Monday afternoon.

The Vikings fell behind 2-0 inside the first eight minutes of the game, but held the Hawks in check the rest of the half while scoring two goals of their own. Hermon regained the lead in the second half, but a penalty kick score allowed Caribou to tie the game before both teams came up empty in the two overtime periods.

Kevin Frederick put the Hawks on the board first scoring with 36:30 still to play in the first half. Frederick notched his second goal with 31:59 on the clock to put the Hawks up 2-0.

Matt Till finally got the Vikings on the board scoring with 11:50 left in the first half to cut the Hermon lead to 2-1. With 4:23 on the clock, Ben Blackstone wrapped a direct kick around the Hermon 3-man wall and past keeper Brady Knowles for the tying goal for the Vikings.

Hermon regained the lead in the second half when Josh Allen scored on a direct kick with 26:50 left in regulation to give the Hawks a 3-2 edge. The lead was short lived for the Hawks, as Frederick, who took over as the keeper in the second half, was called for tripping in front of the net resulting in a penalty kick for Caribou. Chad Caverhill drilled the ball to Frederick’s right side into the back corner of the net to tie the game at 3-3 with 19:02 left to play.

Neither team was able to find the inside of the net the rest of the way, despite a number of scoring opportunities over the two overtime periods for both teams. Frederick help prevent a Hawks loss when he fisted a shot up over the crossbar with 1:26 left in the second overtime, and then made another great save off a corner kick with 20 seconds left in the game.

Garrett Jordan had seven saves for Caribou on 20 Hermon shots in the game. Knowles and Frederick combined to make seven stops on 17 Vikings shots for Hermon.

Hawks fall to Caribou in season opener

Monday at Pottle Field on the campus of Hermon High School, Caribou scored five first half goals and cruised to a 5-1 win over Hermon in the Hawks season opening game. The Vikings improved to 3-0-1 with the victory.

Ginny Kieffer put the Vikings on the board 1:22 into the game to stun the young Hawks. Jenna Selander made it 2-0 Caribou when she scored off a Jamie Martin assist with 14:27 left in the half. Olivia Sleeper kept the offense rolling when she scored an unassisted goal at the 13:52 mark to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Caribou’s final two goals of the half came inside the two minute mark. Meredith Sleeper scored with 1:46 remaining on a Paige Small assist, and Meredith Sleeper made it 5-0 just 24 seconds later on an assist by Martin.

The Vikings took advantage of the Hawks mistakes, and dominated play through the majority of the opening half.

In the second half, Hermon came out much more aggressive on offensive and seemed more relaxed on defense as they shut down the Vikings offense and matched up well through the entire half.

Kelsey Small got Hermon on the board when she scored with 33:40 still remaining in the game. That goal would be all that Hermon could manage despite picking up most of their game shots in the final half.

Caribou had 24 shots in the game, and Hermon had 15 shots. Morgan Swan stopped six shots for Caribou, while Sara Bishop stopped six shots for Hermon.

Hornets sting Broncos in football season opener

Friday night Hampden Academy played host to the defending Class B state champions Leavitt of Turner with one thing on their mind, getting revenge for the loss to the same team in the 2009 playoffs that brought an end to their season. Leavitt, on the other hand, would have nothing to do with those plans, as Jordan Hersom threw two touchdown passes and ran back an interception for another score in the Hornets 34-6 mutual season opener.

While the Hornets racked up 300 plus yards on the ground, the defensive unit held the Broncos to just 10 yards rushing.

Hersom threw two touchdown passes to Lucas Witham, a 40 yard score in the first quarter and a 24 yard pass in the third quarter. Hersom picked off a Jon Haws pass in the second quarter and ran it back 41 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.

Leavitt’s first score came with 4:31 left in the opening quarter on a 40-yard pass from Hersom to Witham, and the Hornets led 7-0 heading into the second quarter.

The Hornets added two scores in the second quarter, with the first coming on an eight yard run by Jake Ouellette with 8:46 remaining in the half. The second score came on the Hersom 41 yard touchdown interception, and the Hornets led 21-0 at half time.

In the third quarter, Leavitt sandwiched two more touchdowns around Hampden’s first score. Hersom connected with Witham for the second time in the game on a 24 yard touchdown pass with 8:09 left on the clock. Just over five minutes later, Hampden picked up their first and only score on an eight yard touchdown pass from Haws to Logan Steward. Oscar Rodriguez completed the scoring with a 26 yard touchdown run down the right sideline with 1:16 left in the quarter to put the Hornets on top 34-6.

Reserves on both sides saw plenty of fourth quarter action, but neither team could move the ball into the end zone.

Tondrau hat trick sparks 8-0 Ponies win over Hermon

Foxcroft Academy has long been a powerhouse in field hockey, and Wednesday afternoon the Ponies put on a scoring exhibition led by Tia Tondreau with a hat trick to roll past the Hermon Hawks 8-0 at Laughlin Field on the campus of Hermon High School in a mutual regular season opener.

The Ponies dominated the game almost right from the opening tap, allowing Hermon just four trips to their offensive side of the field during the first half. The Foxcroft defense did not allow the Hawks a shot in the first half. Hermon would get off just one shot in the entire game, and that did not come until inside the final two minutes when Debbi Colpitts unleashed a shot.

Gabi Henderson got the Ponies rolling with a redirected shot coming off an assist from Hilary Kendell with 12:34 left in the opening half. Tondreau scored the second goal of the half, with an assist from Jen Seavey, with 8:52 remaining, and Rachel Keane wrapped up the first half scoring on an unassisted goal with 2:19 left to play for a 3-0 first half lead for the Ponies.

Kate Morrison and Henderson scored the first two goals of the second half, both on assists by Seavey, as Foxcroft put the game away early with a 5-0 lead and just under 20 minutes left to play. Keane scored her second goal of the game (unassisted) with 14:17 remaining to give Foxcroft a 6-0 lead.

Tondreau picked up her hat trick with her second and third goals being the final scores of the game. With 13:29 still left on the clock, Tondreau scored off an assist by Henderson for her second goal. Her hat trick goal came with just 2:54 left in the game as Lindsay Arno provided the assist and the Ponies wrapped up the game with their eighth goal.

Tondreau had three goals in the game to lead the scoring. Henderson had two goals and an assist, and Keane scored two goals. Morrison added one goal for the Ponies. Seavey had three assists in the game, while Kendell and Arno each chipped in with an assist.

Sam Gould got the shutout win in goal for the Ponies, making one save on one Hermon shot. Nicolette Hashey picked up 13 saves on 26 Foxcroft shots.

The Ponies had the edge in penalty corners as well, getting nine corners in the game to six for the Hawks. All of Hermon’s corners came in the second half.

ST.LOUIS - Today, Saturday, June 27, we took a ride by tram up to the top of the St. Louis Arch 630 feet above ground. There you can see the city of St. Louis and the surrounding areas, as well as a portion of the Mississippi River.

My visit to Saint Louis, Missouri

ST. LOUIS, MO - During the week of June 21-28, I traveled to St. Louis on a work related visit. Most of the week, so far, has been spent working in an industrial scrap warehouse which is located in Madison, Illinois. This is where any thing to do with metals, iron, batteries, etc. (PC's, computer boards, transmissions, electronics of all kinds, and telecommunication systems to name a few)wind up. All of these scrap items are packed up on pallets, and shipped out to refineries and foreign countries to be recycled into many of the NEW items we purchase today.

I spent most of my time in the warehouse, which was 100+ degrees every day. I sorted through many of the items headed to scrap, and with some help from one of the warehouse workers pulled over 2,500 pounds of merchandise to be trucked to Maine (5 pallets) to be sold on eBay.

2009 Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race, Trevor MacLean overall winner

Saturday morning in Kenduskeag Village, the 43rd Annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race kicked of at approximately 8:30 a.m. A final count of 510 boaters participated in the 16.5mile race from Kenduskeag to the downtown Bangor finish line.

Five crafts were released every one minute with the final boaters taking off around 9:30 a.m. The low water slowed things down along the course, with the first official participants coming through Six Mile Falls at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Trevor MacLean of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia was the overall winner of the race, the fifth time in eight races MacLean has won. He paddled his kayak in 2 hours and 17.58 minutes to the finish line. Robert Lang, from Rothesay, New Brunswick, finished second in the race with a time of 2:22.45. Lang, an 11 time Kenduskeag Stream champion, has finished second two years in a row.

Steve Woodward (Cumberland, ME) and Jeff Owen (Orono, ME) were the top canoeists, finishing first with a time of 2:29.08.

Glenburn Rec fall sports Team & Individual photos

On the final Saturday of September, I photographed the Glenburn Recreation fall sports teams, which consisted of one field hockey team and 11 soccer teams from Pre-K through 4-5-6 grade.

Of course, my favorites where the Pre-K kids and the 1st graders. A special thanks to Angel Nickerson for her help getting the Pre-K kids ready for their photographs.

These are double sided with the players photo and name on the front and statistics such as age, height, weight, position, and uniform number on the back of the cards. University of Virginia Football Complex

This week I went to see the University of Virginia football complex. David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium seats 61,500, and is most often filled to capacity. It was constructed in 1931, and is the oldest Division 1 stadium in Virginia.

The stadium was closed, so I was only able to grab a few photos from the gate area but you can get an idea of the size, etc of the stadium from the photos.

Today (Sunday, July 27) my son-in-law Steve took me to the printing plant where he works in Charlottesville. The plant is owned by Cenveo, Inc, the third largest graphics communication company in North America. They operate in the US, India, Asia, and the Caribbean Rim, and employ approximately 10,000 people world wide.

A trip to the winery!

While vacationing in Virginia this week, my youngest daughter Leaha and her husband Steve and I headed from their home in Charlottesville to Gordonsville to visit my oldest daughter Staci. We headed down the Seminole Trail (Rt. 29). Here are a few photos along the way:

Along the way I shot just a couple photos. The first one is of a cool looking water tower, and the second one is just a nice looking house that I have always liked since my first trip here.

Coming into Gordonsville, the kids took me into Horton Winery. A wine vineyard that has a gift shop, offers wine tasting, and gives tours of the winery. We didn't get to go on a tour because it was early in the day and things were slow. Here are some photos of the vineyard:

Inside the store, you can see the tasting area's as well as the many gift items and hundreds of bottles of wine available for sale.

2008 Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race

Saturday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. the first group of canoeists and kayakers took off from the town of Kenduskeag, heading down the Kenduskeag Stream towards the finish line near downtown Bangor.

The first boaters made their way through Six Mile Falls nearly one hour and 20 minutes later (9:50 a.m.). All the photos seen here and in the photo gallery were shot from the bridge at Six Mile Falls.

Here We Go Again!!

These photos were taken at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. It has been snowing since about 7:00 a.m., and is not supposed to stop until around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2.

This photo (above) is looking towards the back of the yard where you can see the snowfall pretty good.

I am standing in my driveway in the above photo, looking up the road and you can see that beyond the vehicle in the photo it is almost a "whiteout" effect from the snow.

"Foxglove" plants are pretty but can be fatal

This “Foxglove” plant is our first one. We were so pleased at the beauty of this plant, we plan on adding a couple of different colors next spring. This IS NOT a plant you want to grow if you have outdoor pets or small children. Below is a description of a FOXGLOVE, including it’s dangers.

It is a herbaceous biennial plant. The leaves are spirally arranged, simple, 10-35 cm long and 5-12 cm broad, grey-green, downy, and with a finely toothed margin; they form a tight rosette at ground level in the first year. The flowering stem develops in the second year, growing to 1-2 m tall. The flowers are arranged in a showy, terminal, elongated cluster, each tubular, pendent, purple (also pink, rose, yellow, or white in selected cultivars). They are also spotted inside bottom of the tube. The fruit is a capsule which splits open at maturity to release the numerous tiny (0.1-0.2 mm) seeds.

Toxicity

Due to the presence of the cardiac glycoside digitoxin, the leaves, flowers and seeds of this plant are all poisonous to humans and some animals and can be fatal if eaten.

Extracted from the leaves, this same compound, whose clinical use was pioneered as digitalis by William Withering, is used as a medication for heart failure. He recognized that it "reduced dropsy", increased urine flow and had a powerful effect on heart. Unlike the purified pharmacological forms, extracts of this plant didn't frequently cause intoxication because they induced nausea and vomiting within minutes of ingestion, preventing the patient from consuming more.

The main toxins in Digitalis are the two chemically similar cardiac glycosides: digitoxin and digoxin. Like other cardiac glycosides, the Digitalis toxins exert their effects by inhibiting the ATPase activity of a complex of transmembrane proteins that form the sodium potassium ATPase pump, (Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase). Inhibition of the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase in turn causes a rise not only in intracellular Na⁺, but also in calcium, which in turn results in increased force of myocardial muscle contractions. In other words, at precisely the right dosage, Digitalis toxin can cause the heart to beat more strongly. Mary Hughes Senior Portraits

I first met Mary a couple of months ago when her grandmother, who happens to be my cousin, decided she wanted some photos done of her two grand daughters. Mary was pretty shy that day, and a hard subject to work with.

When I did her portraits recently, Mary was a totally different person. We went to Lakeside Landing Beach on Pushaw Lake in Glenburn to shoot the pictures. Mary was very relaxed and outgoing this time around, although she still didn't care for having a camera in her face. She managed to get through the hour or so without any problems, but I think she was glad when it was over!

My Family In Virginia

The photo above is of my two daughters and their husbands, and they are located in Gordonsville, Virginia. On the left side of the photo is my youngest daughter Leaha and her husband Steve. On the right side is my oldest daughter Staci with her husband Keith.

Keith is born and raised in Virginia, and Staci has lived their since she was a very young child where she resided with her mother. Leaha and Steve just recently moved from their home in Glenburn to Virginia on September 5. They currently are staying with Staci & Keith until they get situated into their own place. I don't believe that Staci is in any kind of a hurry to have them move to a place of their own. This will be a very special Christmas for both girls. Staci is 37 and Leaha is 30, and this Christmas will be the FIRST EVER Christmas that they have spent together.

It is very hard being separated from them, but we will get to see each other once a year and at some point Nancy and I will live in the area as well.

Now this guy is my pride and joy! This is my grandson Logan, and he is Staci & Keith's son. He is a bruiser, going around 6'4" and 240 pounds, and he will be 16 on November 24. As much as I miss my girls, I can't wait from year to year to spend time with Logan. He is very special, and no one will ever be able to measure the love I have for him.

Well, that's my Virginia family! One day we will all be together, and be one happy family working to take care of each other day by day!

Sam Besse Senior Portraits

I met Sam a few years ago through her mother when I started doing photography for the Glenburn Rec. Sam is a beautiful young lady and a 3-sport athlete at Bangor High School. She plays soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and softball in the spring. She is an outstanding pitcher who will most likely get a scholarship to a college to play softball.

Maine Sports Report Senior Softball

In preparation for the Senior League State Tournament on July 21, the Maine Sports Report team hosted a scrimmage game against the very talented Brewer U16 ASA team on Wednesday night, July 11, in Old Town. MSR played extremely well and came away with a 3-1 victory in their very first game as a team.

Some of the game highlights include Hannah Morin getting the first ever base hit and scoring the very first run for MSR, Sam Besse had the first RBI for MSR, and Jillian French recording the team's first pitch at 5:12 p.m. as well as recording the first ever strikeout from the circle.

It was an exciting time for everyone, as the girls recieved their new uniforms just prior to the game. Everyone got to play, and at the conclusion of the game all of the coaches were very optimistic about the team. They will have another scrimmage on July 19 against a team that includes some players from Thomas College.
